LAURA BURATTINI
Full professor in Bioengineering
President of the Biomedical Engineering Degree

I took the PdD in Electrical/Biomedical Engineering in 1998 (University of Rochester, USA) and the Master degree in Electrical/Biomedical Engineering in 1993 (Politecnico di Milano, Itay). Since 2006 I join the Università Politecnica delle Marche where I am currently Associate Professor and President of the Unified Council of the Biomedical Engineering Degree. I teach the courses of Bioengineering and Biomedical Signal and Data Processing, manage the Cardiovascular Bioengineering Lab, and promote Erasmus exchanges. I co-founded B.M.E.D. Bio-Medical Engineering Development srl, an academic spin-off I served as CEO and President from 2012 to 2016. My research interests relate to processing and modelling of biomedical data, especially of the cardiovascular, metabolic and motor systems.

SANDRO FIORETTI
Associated professor in Bioengineering

Specialized in Automatic Control and Computing Systems at University “La Sapienza” in Rome. He currently teaches “Biomechanics of Movement” at the Bachelor degree course in Biomedical Engineering and “Bioengineering of Motor Rehabilitation” at the Master degree course of “Biomedical Engineering”.  He also teaches “Bioengineering applied to Neurologic Rehabilitation”  at the three-year degree course of “Physiotheapy” at the Faculty of Medicine of UNIVPM. Until 2018 he was President of the Bachelor degree in Biomedical Engineering and at the Master degree in Biomedical Engineering.  From 2014 to 2018 he was elected member at the Faculty of Engineering. He is a member of the IEEE, Gruppo Nazionale di Bioingegneria (GNB), Società Italiana Analisi del Movimento in Clinica (SIAMOC) and member of the Interuniversity Centre of Bioengineering of the Human Neuromusculoskeletal System (IUC BOHNES).

MICAELA MORETTINI
Assistant professor in Bioengineering

She got M.sc. in Biomedical Engineering (University of Bologna, 2008) and PhD in “Electromagnetics and Bioengineering” (UNIVPM, 2012). She is currently Assistant Professor in Bioengineering at the Department of Information Engineering (UNIVPM) where she teaches “Models and Control of Biological Systems” for the Master degree course (held in English Language) of “Biomedical Engineering”. Her main expertise is on developing mathematical models and methods for quantitative physiology for the description of glucose-insulin regulatory systems and its alterations leading to Type 2 Diabetes. She also works on describing, through mathematical modeling, the effects of physical exercise on the endocrine-metabolic system. Her research interests also include the field of the biomedical informatics and, in particular, the development of approaches for clinical decision support using electronic health records data aimed to Type 2 Diabetes diagnosis, management and prevention. She was involved in several national research projects and in the EU-FP7 project MISSION T2D. She is member of the IEEE-EMBS, National Bioengineering Group and Italian Society of Diabetology. She was also co-founder of the academic spin-off company B.M.E.D. Bio-Medical Engineering Development Srl (UNIVPM), for which she served as vice-president and then as president.

ALESSANDRO MENGARELLI
Assistant professor in Bioengineering

He received the MS degree in Biomedical Engineering and the PhD degree in Information Engineering from Università Politecnica delle Marche, in 2012 and 2017.
Currently, his research interests involve biomechanics of movement in both static and dynamic conditions, the application of control theory and modeling to the analysis of balance in perturbed conditions, with a multibody dynamic approach and the non-linear analysis of static balance. Further, he is also involved in the assessment of muscular functions during gait through the electromyography signal processing. In these fields, he authored/coauthored scientific publications in peer reviewed international journals and conference proceedings and Guest-Editor for international peer-reviewed journals. He is a member of the IEEE, Gruppo Nazionale di Bioingegneria (GNB) and a junior fellow of the Interuniversity Centre of Bioengineering of the Human Neuromusculoskeletal System (IUC BOHNES).

ILARIA MARCANTONI
Assistant professor in Bioengineering

She is fixed-term researcher at the at the Department of Information Engineering of Università Politecnica delle Marche, where she is currently Assistant Professor and teaches “Bioimaging and brain research” for the master’s degree course of “Biomedical Engineering”. She received her PhD in Information Engineering, from Università Politecnica delle Marche in 2021. Her main research interest is the automatic processing of brain signals and images for the study of structural and functional cortical connectivity, as well as of cortical activation maps while performing a task or receiving stimuli. She works on the processing of cardiovascular signals, particularly for the detection of non-invasive cardiovascular risk indexes, focusing her research work on the identification and quantification of electrocardiographic alternans and correlated syndromes (e.g. long QT syndrome). She was involved in several national research projects and she has scientific collaborations with national and international institutions, among which Ospedali Riuniti (Ancona, Italy), Leiden University Medical Center (Leiden, the Netherlands), Mohammad Hoesin General Hospital (Palembang, Sumatera Selatan, Indonesia). She is member of the IEEE Engineering in Medicine and Biology Society and member of the National Bioengineering Group.

FEDERICA VERDINI
Technical Staff scientist

She’s obtained her MS degree in Electronic Engineering at the Ancona University in 1997 and the PhD in Bioengineering at the Bologna University in 2001.
She is staff scientist at the Movement Analysis Laboratory and teaches the course of Biomedical Engineering Lab at the Bachelor degree in Biomedical Engineering at Università Politecnica delle Marche.
Her research activity focuses on the processing and analysis of biological signals associated with human movement and on the assessment of control models related to motion and posture. In these fields she authored many scientific publications in international journals, books and conference proceedings. She has been involved in European and national research projects.
As staff scientist of Movement Analysis Lab, she supervises the experimental activities of the Lab and participates in the definition of experimental protocols.
She is a member of the IEEE, Gruppo Nazionale di Bioingegneria (GNB) and Siamoc.

AGNESE SBROLLINI
Post-Doc Fellow

She is a post-doc fellow at Università Politecnica delle Marche and she teaches the course of “Statistical Methods for Bioengineering” at the Bachelor Degree course in Biomedical Engineering. She was a Consortium GARR fellowship student (November 2018 to October 2020). She received the PhD in Information Engineering in March 2019 at Università Politecnica delle Marche with a thesis entitled “Biostatics of Cardiac Signals: Theory & Applications”. She received the Degree in Biomedical Engineering at Politecnico di Torino (December 2014) and the Bachelor Degree in Biomedical Engineering at Università Politecnica delle Marche (October 2012). Her main research activities are focused on the application of biostatistics (standard and advanced) on cardiovascular signals, specifically on Sport-Related Sudden Cardiac Death prevention, atrial fibrillation identification and supporting the clinical practice in fetuses and newborns monitoring.

ANDREA TIGRINI
Post-Doc Fellow

He received the MS degree in Biomedical Engineering from Università Politecnica delle Marche, Ancona, Italy, in 2018. Currently, he is a PhD student in Information Engineering at Università Politecnica delle Marche. His research interests involve the study of human biomechanics, neuromuscular control and rehabilitation engineering.

AGNESE PIERSANTI
Post-Doc Fellow

She received the M.sc. in Biomedical Engineering from Università Politecnica delle Marche in 2020. She is currently PhD student in Information Engineering at Università Politecnica delle Marche. Her main research interests involve bioengineering methodologies for the study, management and treatment of major chronic diseases, such as diabetes.

GIULIA BRUSCHI
PhD Student

Giulia Bruschi was born in Ancona (AN) in 1997. She received the M.Sc. degree (cum laude) in Biomedical Engineering from Università Politecnica delle Marche (Ancona, Italy) in 2022. Her thesis focused on the interpretability of a supervised deep learning model able to discriminate between the main histotypes of non-small-cells lung cancer: adenocarcinoma and squamous cell carcinoma. Since November 2022, she is a PhD Student in Information Engineering at the Department of Information Engineering (DII) at Università Politecnica delle Marche (Ancona, Italy). Currently, her research topics include development of techniques for biomedical image processing and classification, mainly for evaluations related to neuroscience.

MARA SCATTOLINI
PhD Student

She received the MS degree in Biomedical Engineering from Università Politecnica delle Marche (Ancona, Italy) in February 2022. She is currently a PhD student in Information Engineering at the Movement Analysis Laboratory at Università Politecnica delle Marche. Her main research interests involve the application of EMG sensors and inertial sensors for the study and analysis of human movement.

RAMI MOBARAK
PhD Student

RAMI MOBARAK received his B.Sc (ranked 1st in class) in Biomedical engineering from the University of Baghdad, Iraq in August,2022 (5 years study program). His research project was a “Hand Rehabilitation Device” that is controlled by EMG signals. Mobarak has been pursuing his PhD in Information Engineering (Biomedical, electronics, and telecommunications engineering curriculum), Università Politecnica delle Marche in Ancona, Italy, since November 2022. His work is in the ” Analysis of movement laboratory ” since his PhD thesis is about ” Estimation of lower and upper limb kinetics through physiological signals.”.

LIBERA LUCIA DEL GIUDICE
PhD Student

She received a bachelor’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Università Politecnica delle Marche in 2021, with a thesis regarding evaluating the signal quality features from EMG for gesture recognition. Then, she received a master’s degree in Biomedical Engineering from Università Politecnica delle Marche, in October 2023, with a thesis titled “Individual estimation of physiological parameters of the glucose-insulin regulatory system: a modeling approach for reduced-sampling oral glucose tolerance test data “. Since November 2023 she is a PhD Student at the Department of Information Engineering at Università Politecnica delle Marche with topics concerning the development of mathematical models and methods, in the field of metabolism, assisted by artificial intelligence strategies.

MHD JAFAR MORTADA
PhD Student

He holds a bachelor’s degree from Damascus University, with a thesis that focused on epilepsy classification using EEG and neural networks. He gained industry experience by working as a Field Service Engineer at Siemens Healthineers for a year and GE Healthcare for two before pursuing a master’s degree at Università Politecnica delle Marche, with an ERASMUS year at Instituto Superior Técnico in Lisbon, Portugal. His master’s thesis explored deep learning for cardiac ultrasound auto-segmentation.
Afterward, he interned at Jagiellonian University in Krakow, Poland, focusing on augmented reality medical apps. Since November 2023, he has been a PhD student at Università Politecnica delle Marche, with a scholarship co-funded by PEACS PV company in the Netherlands. His research interests include electrical heart imaging, medical image processing with deep learning, and electromechanical heart studies.

ENNIO GAMBI
Associate Professor in Telecommunication

He obtained the Master’s Degree in Electronic Engineering in 1986 and the Specialization Diploma in Microwave Engineering in 1989 (both from UNIVPM). Since 1992 he joined UNIVPM, where he is currently associate professor in Telecommunications. He is the teacher of the courses of “Wireless Communications and Navigation Systems” and “TLC Technologies”. The main research interests are currently focused on the applications of millimeter-wave radars and RGBD sensors, with particular attention to observation of subjects for the extraction of vital parameters, through the processing of extracted data based on machine learning algorithms. He has also been dealing with home automation systems for some time, and their evolution towards Ambient Assisted Living systems. He is also interested in systems for monitoring the gases composition, aimed at ensuring air quality.

ANTONIO NOCERA
Ph.D Student

He graduated in the bachelor of Biomedical Engineering in December 2020 with a thesis regarding machine learning for the estimation of muscle onset activation in the electromyography signal. Then, he graduated in the master’s degree of Biomedical Engineering in July 2022 with a thesis titled “Bioengineering of sport: American Football”, where the electrocardiographic signal of a group of american football players was recorded with a chest strap to monitor parameters of heart rate variability through symbolic analysis. Since November 2022 he is a PhD fellow at the department of Information Engineering (DII) with topics embracing the monitoring of human physiological and behavioural parameters from wearable, portable and environmental sensors. .
